The Automated Cockpit
Article Abstract:
New digital cockpit control panels in the Boeing 757 and 767 and the Airbus Industrie A310 help pilots fly the planes safely and fuel-efficiently. The systems optimize flight plans and automatically supervise their execution and have lower maintenance costs than analog panels. The flight management system consists of flight control, engine indication, sensors and display subsystems all under the control of the flight management computer and the crew. Reliability is based on double and triple redundancy. The Airline Pilots' Association in the United States and the Europilots Association are concerned about the safety of the technology but have accepted the reduction from three- to two-man crews. Future technologies may include cockpit display of traffic information (CDTI) systems which would show the pilot the location and headings of nearby planes. Other displays in the future may be headsup three-dimensional projections on the windscreen, microwave landing systems; these will be flat-panel technologies.

International Data Wars Are Brewing
Article Abstract:
The flow of data across international borders may be complicated or curtailed by U.S. FCC telecommunications deregulation, proliferating protectionist policies, and European privacy regulations. As computers have been linked to international data networks, the distinction between data processing and telecommunications has been blurred. The most controversial FCC issue is Computer II, which says that enhanced communications services would not be regulated. Some feel that the protectionist policies of West Germany, Brazil, and Canada are due to U.S. efforts to protect its industries. The Council of Europe has drawn up a treaty to regulate the international exchange and processing of data that is the property of individuals and corporations. Some developing countries are also worried that all of the earth's geosynchronous satellite orbits will be taken by the time they develop satellite technology. A map illustrates Chase Manhattan Bank's sophisticated packet-switching network.
