Winging it
Article Abstract:
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) envisions a solution to airport delays that involves modernizations and a program called Free Flight. Technology is needed to give air traffic controllers better displays and decision-support tools, and such improvements are specified as part of Phase 1 of Free Flight. Under Free Flight, a pilot would be able to determine a flight route, which is not permitted now. The result is expected to be a significant increase in overall efficiency.

By-wire cars turn the corner
Article Abstract:
Automobile manufacturers envision reductions in traffic injuries and fatalities because of the industry's adoption of by-wire systems. Other advantages, such as better fuel economy, are also expected. Essentially, by-wire systems involve putting a computer between a driver and whatever needs to be controlled to improve safety and handling. Electronic steering and braking systems are examples.
