The day Concorde fell to earth
Article Abstract:
Speculations about the cause of the Jul 25, 2000 crash of Air France's Concorde Flight 4590 are presented.. French officials have grounded Concordes and say flights will not resume until investigation of the disaster is complete. Flight 4590 gave no evidence of trouble for the first 32 seconds. The pilot then gave the V1 signal that he could not abort takeoff. Problems emerged rapidly, although causality cannot yet be established. At least one tire burst, a water deflector broke into pieces, metal shards pierced the underside of the left wing and a massive fuel leak caught fire. An engine then lost power as the plane gained altitude, causing loss of flying speed . Much investigation has focused on chronic problems with tires and deflectors.. The US Natl. Transportation Safety Board first expressed concern about Concorde tire incidents in 1981, and two other serious incidents happened at London's Heathrow Airport. . Aerospatiale, which manufactures Concordes in France, redesigned the water deflector, but Air France did not retrofit its planes. Judicial inquiries are underway to determine if there is civil or criminal liability.
