Article Abstract:

Lack of published research on the effects of changes to fastener thread geometry on mechanical performance has undermined the evaluation and understanding of threaded assemblies. This lack of information has prompted the government to issue the Fastener Quality Act which protects the public from uncertified and untested fasteners. However, a study conducted at the University of South Florida showed that pitch diameter does not influence fastener performance when stress is applied. As a result of contradicting mechanical and widely accepted data, users and manufacturers have relied on their experience in dealing with fasteners.
