Too many paws in the rural 'honeypot': early reactions to the Environment Committee's report, The Environmental Impact of Leisure shows how far off a consensu is on protecting the countryside from the more harmful aspects of the leisure boom
Article Abstract:
There are concerns about the over-use of land by leisure visitors to rural areas. The Country Landowners' Association and the CPRE are leading the debate, but there are arguments that everyone has the right to enjoy the countryside. The Environmental Impact of Leisure Activities report by the House of Commons Environment Committee found that the pattern of leisure use of the countryside is changing with a large number of urban dwellers using rural space. The committee does not feel that leisure activites are critically damaging the rural environment.

Conservationists rail against the 'superhighway.' (environmental impact of new communications technology)
Article Abstract:
New communications technology clearly has some advantages, especially for smaller, more remote communities, but is causing concern among environmentalists because of the increasing number of masts required. Many planners are also worried, as they feel that they have little say in where masts are situated. The Council for the Protection of Rural England and the Association of District Councils are among a number of groups opposing PPG8 (telecommunications), which seems to be weighted too heavily in favour of developers.
