Toward a Technically Literate Public
Article Abstract:
A means must be developed for the engineer to use his technical knowledge to benefit society without completely avoiding society's input. The task of educating the populace technically is formidable and would work no better than relying on technical elite to make decisions. The best approach would be technical mediators to representative government that would be knowledgeable in technology and public policy.

Lost Skills
Article Abstract:
Just as the calculator has made the slide rule obsolete for the engineer, computer-aided design has caused engineers to lose other skills. Engineers and architects no longer engage in manual activities in their work, but devote themselves more to abstract design with computers. Some observers feel that such sensory deprivation causes workers psychic dissatisfaction with their work and themselves.

The Automatic Factory
Article Abstract:
The goal of computer automation in the factory is not to create a completely unattended manufacturing process, but to integrate efficient and reliable machine tools for limited production. The flexible manufacturing system (FMS) is a goal. A unified system of computer-aided design, planning, production planning, and manufacturing is needed.
