Unfettered research
Article Abstract:
The attitude toward technology research has unfortunately changed for the worse. Where at one time the federal government considered it sound wisdom to spend tax dollars on far-sighted and unknown things like space research, the attitude today encourages immediate benefits and myopia. Research not geared toward the production of a byproduct that is immediately 'good for' something is considered useless. That attitude is reflected in a report by House Science, Technology and Space Committee chairman George E. Brown Jr, who doubts the wisdom of letting science and technology researchers decide for themselves the paths that research should take. Although a world of useful discoveries await researchers off the beaten path, it looks as if those discoveries will continue to get harder to find.

Where did the Web come from?
Article Abstract:
The origins of the Web may well date from the start of the Internet in 1970, since the process from inception to commercial popularity usually takes a technology 25 years. Another theory takes the Web from the hypertext transport protocol and hypertext document language as a cause-and-effect occurrence. Not matter what its origins are, the Web clearly is altering how information, society and business look and are accessed.
