United Defense teams with suppliers to boost quality

Defense contractor United Defense L.P. Armaments System Division worked innovatively with suppliers to ensure product quality and competitiveness. This was done by integrating the company's quality control and purchasing department, as well as by forming a supplier review board, which closely works with suppliers in determining material specifications and quality and supply schedules. The company also has an on-going total quality management program that it is integrating with all concerned departments.

Quality makes agile manufacturing possible
Article Abstract:
Agility is a trait needed in a competitive industrial environment. Texas Instruments Defense Systems adopted the concept of agile manufacturing by developing technical abilities and communication skills among its employees. A minimum of 40 hours of training per year were given to employees to lessen manufacturing defects and develop skilled people. Another advantage to the company was finishing a project in 28 days from design to production, compared to the previous cycle of 18 months.

Kirk Plastic throws out numbers, goes for quality
Article Abstract:
Kirk Plastic Co. Inc. adopted statistical process control in carrying out its quality improvement initiatives. Employees were also empowered and told to cease production if they identify problems. Kirk Plastic's quality efforts enabled it to reduce its scrap rate from 30% to 11%. Sales went up by 15% while profits grew by 100% in 1993 over the previous year and again in 1994 despite a 5% price increase. The company's workforce declined by 11%.
