Raising Merry Hell in the Midlands: one of the most important retail planning inquiries this year is about to commence, and its outcome could have major implications
Article Abstract:
If the proposed extension to Merry Hill is approved by secretary of state, it could set a precedent for retail planning applications. Merry Hill is currently an integrated enterprise zone in the inner city area, and developer Chelsfield believes the area should be treated as a town centre. However a consortium of 16 West Midlands councils are fighting the development, claiming it is against national, regional and local planning strategies.

Labouring along the road to consensus
Article Abstract:
The UK Labour party is emphasising planning as a key element in its transport policy. This will cover improved public transport, a 20-year integrated approach to transport and a change in the way cars are used. The party plans to give more power to localities to create and implement solutions, but some observers feel that such a total reversal of the planning system will be impossible.
