Article Abstract:

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) acknowledged that production technologies in the US have fallen behind those of other countries. Industry representatives gathered in a workshop to find ways to address problems affecting NIST customers. Speakers discussed topics such as the metrological needs of industry, metrological terms, standards for distance measurement on a nanometer scale and other concerns. At the event's conclusion, participants identified areas to which NIST should focus and underscored the importance of standards in the market.
