Alternative stable states, trait dispersion and ecological restoration
Article Abstract:
A hypothesis suggested that abiotically structured communities showing trait under-dispersion are more likely to show alternative stable states than are competitively structured communities showing trait over-dispersion. An alternative hypothesis is presented and its implications for restoration at local and regional scales are described.

Growing tall vs. growing wide: tree architecture and allometry of Acacia karroo in forest, savanna, and arid environments
Article Abstract:
The differences in branching architecture and allometry in populations of Acacia karroo from forests, savannas and arid-shrublands were analyzed for the investigation of the effects of environmental factors on tree architecture. Savanna trees and arid karoo trees have vertically and laterally extreme evolved architectures.

Plant structural defences against browsing birds: a legacy of New Zealand's extinct moas
Article Abstract:
Feeding trials were carried out on divaricate and non-divaricate plants having emus and ostriches, extant ratite relatives of the extinct moas of New Zealand. An analysis of the diverse plant traits is conducted for determining the most effective plant trait in reducing losses to bird browsing.
