Are wood-boring isopods a real threat to the well being of mangrove forests?
Article Abstract:
Wood-boring species of isopods may pose a threat to mangrove forests. Some researchers feel that marine species of Mollusca and Crustacea have the potential to weaken the fringes of mangrove forests, increasing tree falls during stormy weather. However, since such species have lived for thousands of years in these environments, there is strong likelihood thinning some trees may serve as an aspect of natural selection.

Discovery of Sphaeroma terebrans, a wood-boring isopod, in the red mangrove, Rhizophora mangle, habitat of northern Florida Bay
Article Abstract:
Eight mangrove stands ranging in salinity from 28-39 ppt were selected within Florida Bay as sampling points, which is the first study to document the presence of Sphaeroma terebrans in Florida Bay. Out of the 8 mangrove stands surveyed, Sphaeroma terebrans was observed at 3 sites within north Florida Bay but none were found at any of the 5 other sampling points to the south of Little Madeira Bay.
