Cultural ecology of Whitethroat (Sylvia communis) habitat management by farmers: field-boundary vegetation in lowland England
Article Abstract:
Research indicates that herbaceous boundary strips currently maintained by farmers in Wiltshire, England, are too narrow to work sufficiently as field boundaries for the Whitethroat bird. Proposals include new crop management techniques that could benefit the farmers as well as the Whitethroat.

Cultural ecology of Whitethroat (Sylvia communis) habitat management by farmers: winter in farmland trees and shrubs in Senegambia
Article Abstract:
Research indicates that farmers in Africa's Senegambia region play key roles in improving and maintaining Whitethroat bird habitat, which in turn will improve soil fertility and crop production. Declines in shrubs, trees and fallow areas, primarily the result of controlled burns to clear land, have had a negative impact on both habitat and agricultural output.

Ecological impacts of arable intensification in Europe
Article Abstract:
Research shows that intensifying arable farming in Europe has resulted in increased air pollution by pesticides and carbon dioxide emissions, a reduction in regional biodiversity, and a loss of organic matter in soils. The authors suggest that the European Union Rural Development Regulation 1257/99 incorporate ecological objectives for land use planning.
