Discussion of environmental engineering forum: backflow prevention and water quality in residential sprinkler systems
Article Abstract:
An analysis of the literature on environmental engineering which focused on the prevention of backflow and the water quality of residential sprinkler systems was conducted. The assumptions made by Frederick L. Hart regarding starting conditions and the failure rates of double-check valve assemblies and reduced-pressure backflow devices deserve some clarification. The comparison made of the failure rates is also questionable in its inability to determine accurately the sealing capacity of single-check valves.

Article Abstract:
The public health risks and safety benefits of using backflow prevention for residential sprinkler systems should be carefully weighed before installing such devices. Risk assessment showed that a single check valve is a better option than double-check valve assemblies and reduced-pressure backflow device for individual household sprinklers. Protection devices from waterborne illness should also be used in potable water lines to reduce the risk of waterborne death.

The quality of water: is the double-check valve necessary?
Article Abstract:
Some sectors believe that stagnant water resulting from the use of double-check valves is a health risk, while others point out that such valves should be adapted as a cost-effective alternative to backflow prevention. A multipurpose piping combined system with no dead ends addresses both health and cost aspects by eliminating the problems of stagnant water and the loss of pressure in some parts of a residential building.
