Functional group diversity, resource preemption and the genesis of invasion resistance in a community of marine algae
Article Abstract:
The functional group composition of native algal communities is manipulated and is invaded with the introduced Japanese seaweed Sargassum muticum to understand how individual functional groups contribute to overall resistance. The results suggested that space preemption by crutose and turfy algae inhibited Sargassum muticum recruitment and that light preemption by canopy and understory algae reduced S. muticum survivorship.

Environmental variability influences the structure of benthic algal communities in an oligotrophic lake
Article Abstract:
The importance of environmental variability is tested in a natural setting by comparing the composition of benthic algal communities along a natural gradient of environmental variability created by internal waves in an elongated lake basin. The results have suggested that increased environmental variability can lead to higher biodiversity in a complex natural system.

Habitat diversity and species diversity: testing the competition hypothesis with juvenile salmonids
Article Abstract:
Studies on habitat diversity and competition among coho salmon, cutthroat trout, and steelhead trout indicate that negative competition effects are not mitigated by habitat diversity. Test habitats included diverse streams, pools and riffles. This finding confirms that niche axes variation confounds interactions between biodiversity and competition.
