Early evolution of land plants: phylogeny, physiology, and ecology of the primary terrestrial radiation
Article Abstract:
In the Siluro-Devonian primary radiation of land biotas the phenotypic diversity increased much faster than species diversity across an ecologically undersaturated landscape where there was little competition. Cladistic techniques and DNA sequence data from extant relatives have brought on revolutionary reinterpretation of land plant phylogeny. Systematics and character-state acquisition patterns thus were reviewed. Paleoecological information together with phylogenetic data may offer insights into identity and function of key innovations. A critical mass of phenotypic character has not yet been accumulated.

The grasses: a case study in macroevolution
Article Abstract:
An analysis is presented on plant genetics, focusing on grass morphology. Topics include ectopic gene expression, heterotopy and heterochrony, spikelets, the development of unisexual flowers in the panicoid grasses, and the consistent origin of C(4) photosynthesis.
