Gap dynamics following forest decline: a case study of red spruce forests
Article Abstract:
Recommendations are presented for the evaluation of forest declines and their environmental effects, using the red spruce, Picea rubens, as an example. These include considering decline phenomenology on recovery processes, incorporating the influence of forest community organization on recovery, and assessing declines relative to overall environmental disturbance.

Regional variation in recruitment of hemlock seedlings and saplings in the upper Great Lakes, USA
Article Abstract:
Research indicates that deer browsing, geographic aspects and light availability are the primary factors affecting seedling and sapling survival in hemlock forests in western upper MI and northern WI. Recommended management strategies include protection from browsing and selection of appropriate microsites for establishment.
