Gap dynamics in boreal Aspen stands: is the forest older than we think?
Article Abstract:
Canopy gaps are used to re-estimate ages of Populul tremuloides, or trembling aspen, in boreal forests of Alberta, Canada. Calculations are based on the formation of gaps approximately 40 years after stand initiation; stabilization structures appear between 250 and 300 years, suggesting that previous estimations are inaccurate.

Soil carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus stocks and dynamics under disturbed black spruce forests
Article Abstract:
Research is presented on type and age of disturbance to black spruce forests in Quebec, Canada, including sites recently burned, those burned between 75 and 85 years ago, newly logged sites and sites logged 55 years ago. Soil nitrogen content was higher in older disturbance sites.

Dispersal limitations of epiphytic lichens result in species dependent on old-growth forests
Article Abstract:
Research is presented on the effects of clear-cutting on lichens, which depend on trees for their survival. Poor dispersal and establishment in logged areas indicate the importance of propagule source retention during harvesting.
