Pond permanence and the effects of exotic vertebrates on anurans
Article Abstract:
Enclosure experiments were used to determine if permanent ponds were suitable habitats for native amphibians in the absence of exotic taxa, using Washington state's Puget Lowlands for testing. Results indicate that permanent, rather than seasonal, ponds are suitable for native species, but that neither permanence nor the lack of exotic taxa were sufficient determinants of native amphibian survival rates.

Species introductions and their ecological consequences: an example with congeneric sunfish
Article Abstract:
Research indicates that the introduction of redear sunfish in Michigan lakes had a negative impact on the native species, the pumpkinseed sunfish. Findings show that pumpkinseed populations declined an average of 56% in lakes where redear were introduced, primarily due to the decrease of snails as an available food source.

Biotic invasions: causes, epidemiology, global consequences, and control
Article Abstract:
An overview is presented on invasive species and their environmental impacts. These include extinction of native plants and animals through food supply depletion and the introduction of diseases to which native species have no resistance; strategies for control and prevention are also discussed.
