The first half of George Bush' presidency was characterized by advancements in the area of environmental protection. However, his commitment proved to be weak in the face of political pressure when at the height of the recession he stopped the implementation of rules that went against business interests.

Bill Clinton's environmental record as governor of Arksansas was not a very good one. In fact, he admitted having sidestepped environmental protection for the sake of economic gains. However, his choice of Al Gore as running mate seem to signify his intention of making up for his past mistakes.
