Integrated water reuse: a watershed approach
Article Abstract:
Municipal wastewater reclamation has become integral to ensuring sustainable water supply in urban areas. However, the implementation of water reuse programs is not without problems as shown by the experience of San Diego, CA, whose program was met with strong public opposition. It is argued that such problems could be avoided if water reuse systems are included in the planning stage of new developments. The successful water reuse program in Scottsdale, AZ and advances in water reclamation technology are also discussed.

Article Abstract:
Rapid advances in technology have made the potable reuse of wastewater possible. However, this does not seem practical since there are many other nonpotable applications for wastewater reuse, such as in irrigation and industrial recycling. The public has been generally opposed to the idea of drinking repurified wastewater and have expressed their concern over the safety and reliability of the process. Instead, the implementation of dual water systems for nonpotable reuse applications is recommended.

Drinking repurified wastewater: response
Article Abstract:
The potable reuse of wastewater can serve as a supplement to the diminishing surface and ground water resources. However, careful planning is required to ensure that the repurified wastewater is safe and does not pose any health hazards. Public perception that natural water is safer than repurified wastewater is not valid since both contain the same carbon compounds. This means that much of the technology used to treat the water from effluent disposal sites can be applied to potable wastewater reuse.
