Mangrove restoration: a potential tool for coastal management in tropical developing countries
Article Abstract:
Mangrove plant ecosystems are threatened in many tropical developing countries. These ecosystems are crucial elements for subsistence and commercial fisheries, yet are being lost at 1% a year in the Pacific and Asia. Restoration analysis must include assessment of ecosystem function, which involves identifying key organisms, restoring them, and assessing long-term success.

A learning-based approach to coastal management
Article Abstract:
Three coastal zone management projects treat this as a learning process that requires constant evaluation and refinement. International donors sponsor shrimp aquaculture in Ecuador, coastal highways in Thailand, and shoreline construction in Sri Lanka. The greatest success was experienced when a participatory, issue-driven approach was utilized.

Demarcating coastal vegetation buffers with multicriteria evaluation and GIS at Saldanha Bay, South Africa
Article Abstract:
A Geographic Information System (GIS) was used as a spatial decision-support system to plan greenways and vegetated buffers along South Africa's Saldanha-Langebaan coast. GIS enables planners to incorporate functional criteria in buffer calculations, and is therefore an important component in coastal zone management.
