Mercury in human and environmental samples from two lakes in Amapa, Brazilian Amazon
Article Abstract:
Mercury contamination from gold mining is discussed as seen in environmental and human samples from two lakes in the state of Amapa of the Brazilian Amazon delta region where new gold mining activity exists. Mercury profiles in sediments of Duas Bocas Lake show evolving pollution with mercury significantly higher in fish and human hair than in the Pracuuba Lake area, a pristine area, but in both lakes bioavailability is high, a problem for humans, since daily fish intake is about 200 g.

Reactivity of mercury from gold mining activities in darkwater ecosystems
Article Abstract:
Unoxidized aqueous elemental mercury has been found to form organic complexes in aquatic environments such as darkwater rivers. Electrochemical and thermodynamic analysis shows that these complexes are created when mercury comes in contact with organic acids. These formations are believed to contribute to expanded bioavailability via food chain incorporation.
