Heavy metal surveys in Nordic lakes: concentrations, geographic patterns and relation to critical limits
Article Abstract:
Surveys were conducted for concentrations of 11 metals for a total of 3,000 lakes in Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden, and Russian Kola. Factors influencing heavy metal levels include long-range transported air pollution, total organic carbon concentrations and bedrock geology; findings show that heavy metal pollution of Nordic lakes is present but not yet significant.

Trace element contamination of Norwegian lake sediments
Article Abstract:
More than 200 lakes in Norway were surveyed for atmospheric deposition of anthropogenically derived trace elements such as mercury, lead and cadmium. Findings show that latitude, altitude, and the amount of organic matter affect the presence and concentrations of trace elements in surface sediments; trace elements were significantly higher in surface sediments than in preindustrial sediments.

Northern European lake survey, 1995: Finland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Russian Kola, Russian Karelia, Scotland and Wales
Article Abstract:
A 1995 survey showed commonalities in northern European lakes with the exception of Denmark. Although other bodies of water demonstrated low ionic strength and nitrogen and phosphorus levels, Denmark's lakes showed higher levels due in part to bedrock mineralogy differences and agricultural runoff. Variations between all the lakes are attributable to influential factors such as precipitation and hydrology.
