Ecosystems in the Caspian Sea region have been significantly modified by anthropogenic activities, due to the result of changes in the water flow and degradation of quality in the ecosystems. The root causes for the most important drivers of environmental change in the Caspian Sea region: habitat and community modification are presented.

A comprehensive assessment of the environmental and socioeconomic issues affecting Lake Victoria Basin was carried out following the methodology outlined by the GIWA project. The root causes for over fishing and pollution in Lake Victoria and possible policy options that can help to mitigate the environmental degradation are presented.
