The Global International Waters Assessment for the Pacific Islands: aspects of transboundary, water shortage, and coastal fisheries issues
Article Abstract:
Aspects of transboundary, water shortage, and fisheries issues in context of Global International Waters Assessment (GIWA) for the Pacific Islands are discussed. Socioeconomic issues such as high population growth rates, urban drift, the breakdown of traditional life styles and the rapid adoption of the cash economy exacerbate the environmental impacts.

Disturbance, life history, and optimal management for biodiversity
Article Abstract:
The two major issues such as life history constraints and future global warming trends that are overlooked in current ecosystem management policies and conservative efforts are described. The importance of these two factors in balancing disturbance frequency and intensity for optimal biodiversity maintenance and ecosystem management are discussed.

Water environments: anthropogenic pressures and ecosystem changes in the Atlantic drainage basins of Brazil
Article Abstract:
Modification and loss of ecosystems and ecotones are among the issues identified as severe impacts in most of the South American subregions assessed by the Global International Waters Assessment (GIWA) project. New and creative strategies to promote integrated environment management must be developed.
