The capacity of forest soil to absorb anthropogenic N
Article Abstract:
Capacity of forest soil to absorb anthropogenic nitrogen (N) is discussed as related to an assumed constant rate of N accumulation in soils used for calculations of an average rate. The assumption may be in error, so a study has been carried out to investigate variations in N accumulation in forest soil related to stand age and deposition, with the finding that age of the stand was associated with increases in total N in the mor layer.

Soil sustainability in renewable biomass plantings
Article Abstract:
Short-term studies indicate that the planting of biomass crops offsets the negative environmental impacts of fossil fuels. Biomass crops include perennial woody and herbaceous plants such as willow and switchgrass, which have been shown to reduce erosion, increase organic matter content in surface soils, and prevent nutrient loss via surface runoff.

Determining landscape function and ecosystem dynamics: contribution to ecological restoration in the southern Namib desert
Article Abstract:
An analysis is presented on the roles of seasonal precipitation, biodiversity, climatic extremes, plant-soil interface and geomorphologic processes in ecological restoration in the desert region of southern Namibia. Implications for environmental policy are also discussed.
