The ecology of the machine
Article Abstract:
Global population growth warrants an increase in food production. Such demand could only be satisfied through agricultural area expansion and agricultural mechanization. However, governments and farmers alike have to take into account the limits of mechanization, the suitability and the environment-oriented type of the mechanization system to be utilized, the cost of materials, the effects of mechanization on social structures and the natural resources that can be used. The right kind of mechanization technology exists for any farming system worldwide.

Gone to graveyards, every one
Article Abstract:
Tractor mechanization in Zambia and in other African developing nations proved to be a dismal failure for many reasons. These include the inability of governments to purchase costly spare parts, the high cost of fuel, the absence of competent people to man tractor-hiring services centres and increase in hiring fees that are beyond the farmers' paying capability. Today, the Zambian government has abandoned its tractor mechanization program and has advocated the return to animal traction.

Vetiver: "miracle grass", or oversold cure-all?
Article Abstract:
Vetiveria zizanioides has been called the miracle grass because it was found useful in controlling soil erosion. However, farmers who utilize it have the tendency to be overly dependent on the grass. Soil experts warn that soil erosion implies mismanagement of land. Preventive measures such as the wonder grass may reduce the eroding process, but it will not eradicate the problem. Proper land use is the only solution to permanently conserving soil.
