Morphometry and hydrology of the four large lakes of Sweden
Article Abstract:
The geomorphology of Swedish lakes Malaren, Hjalmaren, Vattern, and Vanern is presented, focusing on water residence time, water balance, water temperature, and exchange of water between subbasins, all of which highlight the ecological variation among the lakes. The correlation between nutrient retention, water exchange, and pollution is also discussed.

Factors affecting population fluctuations of the glacial relict amphipod Monoporeia affinis (Lindstrom) in Sweden's largest lakes
Article Abstract:
Ecological profiles are presented for the Swedish lakes Malaren, Vanern, and Vattern and correlated with abundance levels of Monoporeia affinis. All three lakes demonstrated dramatic population fluctuations. Population regulating factors include summer hypoxia in Malaren, spring diatom biomass in Vanern, and lower nutrient levels in Vattern.

Survival during adverse seasons reveals size-dependent competitive ability in a deposit-feeding amphipod, Monoporeia affinis
Article Abstract:
The effects of starvation on the survival and loss of mass of three age-classes amphipods during the winter season are investigated. The survival experiments are useful for the assessment of the competitive ability and for the identification of the inferior age-classes.
