The impact of commercial horse riding on sub-alpine environments at Cradle Mountain, Tasmania, Australia
Article Abstract:
The environmental impacts of commercial horse riding at Cradle Mountain, Tasmania is disastrous to the ecology of this sub-alpine terrain. The eucalyptus forest shows soil erosion of 397 cm of soil per 1 meter width of track over a two-year period. A declining vegetation cover, the formation of new tracks, and the appearance of new braids have intensified the rate of ecological degradation. While the impact depends on the level and intensity of horse usage, management policies should address the problem of track hardening to sustain the current level of commercial horse riding activity.

Impacts of trampling on alpine environments in central Tasmania
Article Abstract:
Detailed surface profiles give an earlier warning of damage than changes in vegetation cover when assessing low numbers of walkers over untracked country, according to research into the impact of levels between 30 and 700 passes applied in representative Tasmanian alpine environments. However, there are restrictions on the sensitivity of detailed surface profiles because of the low number of passes. Lifeforms were found to show the same levels of susceptibility to trampling as those in northern hemisphere studies.
