The predation cost of being a male: Implications for sex-specific rates of ageing
Article Abstract:
The unusual prey catching behavior of the barn owl Tyto alba and the tawny owl Strix alaco was used to estimate the sex ratio of their most common preys. The results reveal that predation, a chief source of extrinsic mortality was strongly sex-biased which may select for alternate life history strategies between males and females and account for male life span being frequently lower than female lifespan in many animal species.

Avian community composition in isolated forest fragments: A conceptual revision
Article Abstract:
A unifying conceptual model incorporating interspecific competition that accounts for a decline in species numbers and an increase in the rate of predation and parasitism with increasing fragment isolation is proposed. The model generally predicts the relative abundance of individual species in isolated forest fragments.
