The role of sink to source re-colonisation in the population dynamics of insects living in unstable habitats: an example of terrestrial chironomids
Article Abstract:
Research on insect population persistence indicates that even low rates of egg-laying in sink habitats can assist in re-colonization of source habitats. Studies were conducted on the Diptera species Smittia atterima, and compared the susceptibility of source habitats to summer desiccation and resultant larval declines to the stability of sink habitats, which offer lower quality resources but are not susceptible to seasonal variation.

Slow growth of a translocated beaver population partly due to a climatic shift in food quality
Article Abstract:
The climate-related stoichiometric effect caused the low reproductive success of a beaver Castor fiber population that was translocated westward in Europe at the time of a rapid increase in spring temperatures. In addition to an increase over time, annual reproductive rate of the translocated beavers was highest in cold springs.

Modelling the population consequences of age- and sex-related differences in winter mortality in the oystercatcher, Haematopus ostralegus
Article Abstract:
Research on modeled Haematopus ostralegus populations highlights the importance of age and sex differences in mortality, and implications for wildlife management policies are discussed. Mortality modeling for specific scenarios is presented, including population density, bird age, bird gender and habitat reduction.
