Validating possible effects of eutrophication using PCB concentrations in bivalves and sediment of the US musselwatch and benthic surveillance programs
Article Abstract:
Marine sediments and three species of bivalves were examined for the presence of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), with the results correlated to the total organic carbon content representing the the sampling sites' trophic status. PCB levels were positively linearly correlated to total organic carbon content in sediments but not in bivalves; this difference may be explained by water column algal growth dynamics which affect washout.

Monitoring of persistent organic pollutants (POPs): examples from Lake Vattern, Sweden
Article Abstract:
Research is presented on levels of persistent organic pollutants in fish and sediments of the Swedish lake Vattern, specifically polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and DDT. Arctic char species showed yearly declines of 13% for DDT and 5% for PCBs, while sediment contaminant levels for less polluted areas were about 60% of the levels for heavily polluted areas.
