Peru climbs on the Chilean bandwagon
Article Abstract:
Peru adopted in Nov 1991, a social security system according to the Chilean mold that gave employees the option to either remain with the existing state-controlled system or join privatized systems. The old centralized system was riddled with administrative inefficiencies and financial mishandling. With the new system, private initiative will play a decisive role in its successful implementation. For example, the cost burden will now shift to employees as their contributions will consequently rise. Only time will tell whether Peru can emulate Chile's success.
