Cork-Taint Lawsuit Settled in California

Sabate (France), a major cork manufacturer, and 4 US West Coast wineries, Carneros Creek (Napa, California), Parducci Wine Cellars (Mendocino, California), Sapphire Hill (Sonoma, California) and Van Duzer (Oregon) will settle for an undisclosed amount a lawsuit claiming that Sabate's Altec stoppers, made of cork particles, a polymer and a binding agent, tainted thousands of cases of wine, causing multimillion-dollar losses. Sabate still faces a suit from Chateau des Charmes seeking $4 million in damages.

Research group claims to have eliminated wine-cork taint
Article Abstract:
Tainted corks ruin millions of dollars of wine every year by causing 'off' flavors and aromas. Researchers claim to have developed a cork sterilization method, using microwave technology, that will kill microbes throughout the stopper. The corks are being tested at 25 wineries, and so far the results have been good.
