Alentejo, Bairrada and Dao, Douro, Vinho Verde and other wines are rated on a scale of one to 100, with tasting notes provided. None of the wines qualify as excellent, but all are good and prices are reasonable. A 1992 Sogrape Alentejo Vinha do Monte at $9 is rated 85.

Chile wine has become well known for producing affordable common wines. Chilean wine is not yet at the caliber of famous European vintners, but advances in quality are being made. Recommended is the $30 De Martino Maipo Valley Reserva de Familla 1996.
