Index growth slows to 4 percent; slackening pace in the fourth quarter means good news for bidders at auction

Wine buyers will be pleased to note that fine wine prices only increased an average of 4% from the third quarter to the fourth quarter of 1996. Prices, however, are up 40% on the average from 1996 to 1997. Burgundy and Bordeaux reds, Sauternes, California Cabernet and Port prices are given.

Auction Index up 8.5 percent in fourth quarter
Article Abstract:
The Wine Spectator Auction Index has risen from 182 to an all-time high of 197 in the fourth quarter of 2003. The average price of the wines listed in the index has doubled since the database was created in the fourth quarter of 1995.
