An evaluation of dietary guidance graphic alternatives: the evolution of the eating right pyramid
Article Abstract:
Graphics to convey American nutrition guidelines were evaluated to determine which one is most easily interpreted, informative, usable and effective in presenting nutritional groups. Ten graphic designs were tested using interviews on schoolchildren and adults of various socioeconomic groups and educational attainment. Features such as shape, symbols and manner of illustration were considered. Among those tested, the pyramid and bowl graphic designs proved to be most effective in clearly relaying the message of diet guidelines. The pyramid best relates moderation and proportionality in diet while the bowl portrays best the importance of variety of nutrients.

Nutrition recommendations update: dietary fats and children
Article Abstract:
Health Canada and the Canadian Paediatric Society established a Working Group to see if the Nutrition Recommendations for Canadians of 1990 should be revised for growing children older than 2. The Working Group decided that children should not modify their diets due to fat content before adolescence. Children in early adolescence should lower their fat intake gradually. Only after linear growth has ceased should the fat restriction recommended for adult Canadians be followed. Children should emphasize variety and healthful eating and also engage in physical exercise.

Criteria for determining recommended dietary allowances for healthy older adults
Article Abstract:
Standards for setting recommended dietary allowances (RDAs) for healthy older individuals are assessed. Criteria that are proposed to be included in determining new RDAs include exposure to the sun, smoking and its effect on micronutrient levels and heart disease. Clinically significant functional parameters for setting RDAs for healthy elderly people include phagocytic function, antibody titers to vaccine, delayed hypersensitivity responses and levels and indices of oxidative stress.
