Beta-adrenergic receptor-mediated functions in porcine adipose tissue are not affected differently by saturated vs. unsaturated dietary fats
Article Abstract:
The effects of saturated and unsaturated dietary fats on fatty acid composition and beta-adrenergic receptors of plasma membranes were analyzed in pigs. Pigs fed beef tallow, which contains saturated fats, had larger subcutaneous fat cells with greater rates of triacylglycerol synthesis as compared to the pigs fed corn oil, which has unsaturated fat. The differences in the adrenergic receptor numbers were found to be dependet on the units of measurement. Nonetheless, the beta-adrenergic receptor-mediated functions of porcine adipose tissue were not affected by either diet. These findings imply that diet-induced changes may only have minimal metabolic effects.

Dietary polyunsaturated to saturated fatty acid ratio alters hepatic LDL transport in cynomolgus macaques fed low cholesterol diets
Article Abstract:
The interaction of saturated and unsaturated dietary triglycerides and cholesterol on low density lipoprotein (LDL) metabolism in cynomolgus macaques was studied. The level of dietary cholesterol was directly related to the resultant total plasma and LDL cholesterol levels. Macaques fed saturated triglycerides had higher plasma LDL as compared to animals fed the same amount of unsaturated triglycerides or cholesterol. Increased hepatic receptor activity due to polyunsaturated fatty acid diets occurred only when dietary cholesterol was minimal. LDL production is decreased when dietary cholesterol is excessive.
