Beta-carotene uptake and tissue distribution in ferrets (Mustela putorius furo) (Nutrient Metabolism)
Article Abstract:
The time interval between absorption and depletion of beta carotene in ferret serum and tissues was examined to determine the ferret's viability as a model in studying carotenoid metabolism. A single dose of beta carotenoid was given to male ferrets with their meal. Ferrets were sacrificed at various time intervals after carotene administration. Maximum serum concentration was observed 8 hours postprandial while blood carotenoid clearance was observed 76 hours after feeding. Although the serum response pattern was consistent, histological distribution of beta carotene showed variation.

Bone composition and histology of young growing rats fed diets of varied calcium bioavailability: spinach, nonfat dry milk, or calcium carbonate added to casein
Article Abstract:
The effect of calcium bioavailability on the histology and composition of bones was investigated in weanling male rats given diets based on materials with varying calcium availability. Depressed bone growth and low ash composition were observed in rats fed with spinach, the diet regimen with the lowest calcium bioavailability. Bone underdevelopment and reduced mineralization were also observed in spinach-fed rats. On the other hand, bone quantity was reduced but bone quality was not compromised in rats given calcium-deficient diets based on materials with high calcium bioavailability.

Evaluation of the preruminant calf as a model for the study of human carotenoid metabolism
Article Abstract:
The preruminant Holstein calf was evaluated as a model for the study of human carotenoid metabolism. The study yielded serum beta-carotene concentration curves very similar to human values. Beta-carotene levels in adrenal tissue, liver, spleen, lung, adipose and kidney were also monitored. The similarity of the calf, with respect to serum levels, absorption kinetics and tissue accumulation of beta-carotene indicates it may be a viable model for human carotenoid metabolism research.
