Cobalt-vitamin B-12 deficiency decreases methionine synthase activity and phospholipid methylation in sheep
Article Abstract:
A study was done on the effect of cobalt-vitamin B12 deficiency on methionine synthase activity and methylation in sheep. It was shown that the plasma concentrations of vitamin B12 in sheep deprived of cobalt was lower compared to those receiving sufficient amounts of cobalt in the diet. Methionine synthase activity was lower in the kidney, liver and spinal cord while tissue ratio of S-adenosyl methionine (SAM) to S-adenosyl homocysteine was low only in the liver. This finding suggests that only the hepatic activity of SAM-dependent methyltransferase enzymes is impaired.

Type I iodothryronine deiodinase activity after high selenium intake, and relations between selenium and iodine metabolism in rats
Article Abstract:
An experiment was conducted to determine the effects of low iodine or low selenium supply on the enzymatic activities of type I iodothyronine deiodinase (I-D) and glutathione peroxidase. Results showed lower hepatic activities for I-D and glutathione peroxidase in selenium-depleted rats as compared with the control animals fed with a diet supplemented by 0.3 mg/kg of body weight.
