Communicating the message of the Food Guide Pyramid graphic to adolescents through a classroom poster contest
Article Abstract:
The Food Guide Pyramid introduced by the US Agriculture Dept in 1992 aims to communicate the message that the foundation of a healthy diet consists largely of grains and fruits and vegetables. Many adolescents have continued to consume diets high in fat and low on fruit and vegetables. An innovative approach was developed to motivate adolescents to adopt good eating habits and to learn the Food Guide Pyramid. It involved a poster contest where students designed and created a 14" x 22" poster featuring the pyramid and including a health message.

Middle school students earn bonus points for fruit and vegetable snacks
Article Abstract:
A private middle school in Houston, TX, implemented a 6-week intervention program that rewarded students for bringing fruit and vegetable snacks to school. To reinforce new snack behavior, students were awarded bonus points for bringing a fruit or fruit juice to class as a snack. Bringing vegetable snacks as well as unusual or exotic fruits or vegetables also earned students extra bonus points. The reward system, aside from increasing short-term intake of fruits and vegetables, also improved students' grades for the period by a maximum of 5%.
