Cost containment through nutrition intervention
Article Abstract:
Early assessment and intervention may prevent malnutrition in certain hospital patients and help reduce health care costs. Malnutrition may lead to poor patient outcomes and increased hospital stays. Current assessment techniques do not appear to properly monitor the risk of malnutrition in patients and the benefits of nutritional intervention. The Nutrition Care Management Institute's Malnutrition Cost Survey may accurately evaluate the effects of nutritional interventions in hospitals.

Developing industrial-governmental-academic partnerships to address micronutrient malnutrition
Article Abstract:
The challenges of providing food to an increasing global population will require cooperation between governments, universities and the food industry. It is estimated that half the population of many developing countries suffers from nutrient deficiencies. The food industry has the job of producing and selling products, but the government can help by collecting statistics and formulating public policy. Universities can conduct basic and applied research to support both these functions.

Refusal to eat in the elderly
Article Abstract:
Physiologic changes linked to aging, dementia, depression as well as medical, social and environmental factors can be the cause of eating disorders and malnutrition in the elderly. Environmental, behavior or therapeutic changes may improve the well being of the patient and food intake may increase. Ethical and cultural issues should be considered when tube feeding is considered.
