Intrauterine programming of hypertension: nutrient-hormone interactions
Article Abstract:
Maternal malnutrition may determine the extent of future hypertension and heart disease in the fetus. Restricting maternal food intake can have nutritional and hormonal consequences, such as increased 11betaHSD activity in the placenta. A low-protein diet of the mother rat impairs fetal growth and is associated with high blood pressure in the offspring. Maternal corticosteroid production caused by food restriction and excess glucocortocoid hormones can adversely affect growth patterns in the fetus, setting the stage for heart disease later in life.

Growth in utero and coronary heart disease
Article Abstract:
Coronary heart disease (CHD) may be more determined by prenatal influences than by adult lifestyle choices. Lack of nutrients and oxygen may interfere with rapid cell division during critical periods, stunting fetal growth. Small size at birth increased the risk of CHD most compared to larger birth sizes. This relationship holds true for related conditions, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and fibrinogen concentration. Continued retarded growth at the age of one year predisposes further towards developing heart disease.

Mediterranean diet and coronary heart disease: are antioxidants critical?
Article Abstract:
One of the many diets postulating that Mediterranean diets reduce the risk of coronary heart disease suggests that the antioxidant properties of several plant foods in the Mediterranean diet may be key mediators of the beneficial effects of this diet.
