Effects of maternal employment on family food consumption patterns and children's diets
Article Abstract:
The effects of maternal employment on both the food consumption patterns of family members and on the quality of children's diets in the US are reviewed. Results show that as working mothers devote less time on food preparation and household activities compared to full time housewives, their children eat more meals away from home. Despite this eating pattern, however, research reviewed revealed that the quality of children's diets were found adequate in nutrient value and that maternal employment was not directly related to the quality of diets. The implications of such results to nutrition education are discussed.
