Efficiency of dietary methionine utilization by young pigs
Article Abstract:
The amino acid metabolism of pigs was studied by evaluating the efficiency of methionine retention and its effects on protein amino acid composition. Four groups of weanling pigs were fed diets with varying methionine content per group. Whole-body analyses were done for amino acid studies. Results showed the linear relationship between retention and intake of methionine and protein. Methionine intake also resulted to altered amino acid composition and a sinmilar utilization of another amino acid, cystine. In the methionine deficiency, cystine could be substituted to maintain nitrogen balance.

Urinary taurine excretion as a function of taurine intake in adult cats
Article Abstract:
Studies were made on the pattern of taurine urinary excretion of cats, which had diets with varying amounts of taurine. Measurements show that the pattern shifts drastically at daily taurine intakes of at least 96 micromoles per kilogram of bodyweight. At this breakpoint, plasma taurine rises linearly while blood taurine rises asymptomatically by 95%. Taurine intakes above this point cause excretion rates 15 times greater than amounts below. The results suggest that urinary analysis by cystocentesis may be as reliable as plasma or whole-blood analysis as an index to total system taurine.

Taurine and serine supplementation modulates the metabolic response to tumor necrosis factor alpha in rats fed a low protein diet
Article Abstract:
A study was done on the effects of serine and taurine on alpha tumor necrosis factor (alpha TNF) in rats fed with a low protein diet. Conditions wherein diet is low in protein such as in inflammation impair the response of tissues to TNF injections since the only available source of protein is casein, a poor source of sulfur amino acids. Addition of taurine and serine does not influence growth but taurine does restore gluthathione concentrations. Dietary serine and taurine also facilitate the synthesis of acute phase proteins during severe inflammatory disease.
