Nutrition problems among home-living elderly people may lead to disease and hospitalization
Article Abstract:
Results of a nutritional study involving 246 hospitalized and 103 home living elderly subjects indicate malnutrition is an important factor leading to hospitalization. Elderly people who have swallowing or dental problems, reduced taste and appetite, and are unable to shop on their own are at risk for malnutrition, which contributes to illnesses that lead to their being hospitalized. If those at risk can be identified, nutrition intervention could prevent fatalities.

The role of nutrition in immunity in the aged
Article Abstract:
Increased levels of nutritional supplements above currently recommended levels may help to improve immune response in the elderly. Dysregulation of the immune response occurs with aging, and the elderly are also prone to nutritional deficiencies. Studies have suggested that free radical production can be reduced by nutritional supplementation.
