Postnatal selenium repletion protects lungs of neonatal rats from hyperoxia
Article Abstract:
The protective effect of selenium against the effects of oxygen toxicity on the lungs of neonatal rats was investigated. Two groups of pregnant mice were each fed diets adequate and deficient in selenium and their lactating pups were subsequently exposed to different levels of oxygen. The results showed that selenium repleted diets reduced lung damage to oxygen rich environment and improves pulmonary maturity by increasing lung volume and surface area. The mechanism for selenium's protective effect remains unknown although possible roles of thyroid hormone and enzyme receptors were being considered.

Cephaloridine nephrotoxicity is potentiated by selenium deficiency but not copper deficiency in rats
Article Abstract:
The protective effect of selenium and copper against lipid peroxidation in the kidney due to cephaloridine toxicity was studied in rats. Morphologic and laboratory data obtained from kidney tissue shows decreased antioxidant activity in the kidney because of depleted gluthatione peroxidase. These show that nephrotoxicity to cephaloridine is further potentiated by selenium deficiency. Copper deficiency however, has no influence on kidney damage caused by cephaloridine administration and combined deficiency of both minerals does not potentiated hepatic cepahloridine toxicity.

Dietary selenium stabilizes glutathione peroxidase mRNA in rat liver
Article Abstract:
A study was done on the effect of dietary selenium on glutathione peroxidase mRNA in rat liver. It was shown that transcription for the selenium-glutathione peroxidase (Se-GPX) is independent of dietary selenium intake. However, it was shown that selenium deprivation exerts a mild stimulatory effect on the transcription activity in rat livers. These findings suggest that a cytosolic mRNA turnover is most sensitive to changes in dietary Se intake in pre-translational Se-GPX gene expression.
