Enhancement of biological activity by conjugation reactions
Article Abstract:
Conjugation of the metabolites of biologically active compounds with biomolecules can enhance their activities in biological systems. Conjugation increases the solubility of metabolites and enhances their excretion from the system. This function of metabolic conjugation led to its implication in detoxification processes. However, recent findings have shown that conjugation can actually activate derivatives of compounds functional in biological systems. Metabolic conjugation enhances the biological activities of xenobiotics, folic acid, retinoic acid and halogenated hydrocarbons.

Secretion of vitamin A and retinol-binding protein into plasma is depressed in rats by N-(4-hydroxyphenyl)retinamide (fenretinide)
Article Abstract:
N-(4-hydroxyphenyl)retinamide (HPR) reduces serum retinol concentrations in rats with normal vitamin A status. The mean transit times for retinol and retinol-binding protein (RBP) are in the same range for HPR-treated and normal rats, which means there is no accelerated removal of retinol or RBP from the circulation due to HPR treatment. Liquid chromatography of radioactive samples showed decreased secretion of the retinol-RBP complex secretion from hepatic and extrahepatic tissues. Thus, decreased plasma retinol level following HPR treatment is due to reduced input into plasma.

E.L. Robert Stokstad (1913-1995)
Article Abstract:
E.L. Robert Stokstad, an agriculturist and an expert in poultry nutrition, contributed significantly to research on vitamin B-12 and folic acid. He pioneered studies on folates in mammalian tissues. For his work, he received many awards including those given by the Poultry Science Assn., Mead Johnson and the American Institute of Nutrition. Stokstad was born in China but grew up in the US.
