The qualities and use of poppy seeds, which are smooth, round with beige colored mass with a delicate herbal fragrance, in every Bengali kitchen are described. The historical importance of the poppy seeds, a native of western Asia and southeastern Europe and cultivated on the Indian subcontinent as a source of opium, is discussed.
